I first learned about interspecies communication when I broke my ankle in five places. I was laying in bed in a great amount of pain when I heard, "I know we come from different cultures, and maybe you don't think I can help you, but if you'll just pet me, I will take away your pain." I heard these words in my head as clearly as someone speaking to me. I opened my eyes to find my angel cat, Kisa, on my pillow and looking right at me. I knew it was her. I did pet her and my pain did go away! I slept comfortably for the first time since the accident.

The next week a catalog came in the mail and in it was a book about communicating with animals. I couldn't believe it. Someone else thought this was possible too! I sent for the book right away, Penelope Smith's Animal Talk: Telepathic Communication, and devoured it. I then sent for her video and cassette tapes. I subsequently found out that there are many, many people who communicate with animals.

Since the experience with Kisa, I have had many, many communications with animals, some of which I have written about and would like to share with you.

Anybody can communicate with animals. Many children communicate with animals and might even tell mommy that the dog has a stomach ache but then she is probably told that "It's just your imagination, dear." You hear this enough as a child and you start to believe that it is "just your imagination." But what is the imagination? A big part of "imagination" is imaging, which is exactly what you do to communicate with animals. Animals communicate in pictures, feelings, emotions and concepts. Sometimes you get a picture of what the animal is trying to communicate but many times it is an emotion or concept that you pick up. When you are communicating with an animal, picture in your mind what it is you are trying to get them to do or what you are trying to tell them. Send them your emotions and feelings too. Don't worry if your animal friend is getting the right message.  If you intend that your message gets there, it will.  Use your intention and imagination to get your messages across.

Many times when people are trying to teach a new behavior to an animal, they have a picture in their mind of what it is they don't want the animal to do. For example, you don't want your dog to chase the cat, but when you see him eye your cat, you automatically think, "Oh, no, he's going to chase the cat," and a picture comes up of him doing that in your mind. Your dog picks up on your thoughts and pictures and of course, chases the cat. Then he's confused because he got your pictures and thoughts but then you yelled at him for doing what he thought you wanted. Instead, picture in your mind a harmonious relationship between your dog and cat. Send your dog pictures of him protecting your cat and maybe even being friends and playing together. If you have trouble using your imagination to create pictures, use words, such as "gentle." Just saying "gentle" brings on the feelings and emotions you want to convey to your dog and he will pick that up. Another key is not to try too hard. Try not to lean over your animal in anticipation of hearing what they are saying.  Sit back, relax and let the animal's thoughts and feelings come to you.  If you've meditated, you know the state of mind you should to be in to communicate clearly.  

Like any ability, communication needs to be practiced. I am still learning and can't always communicate clearly. But when I can, it is a feeling beyond words. Hearing and being heard by an animal is an experience every human should have!
