This page has been created in an effort to enlighten the confusion of the American public about the German taste treat Wiener Schnitzel. There is a fast food franchise in the US called 'Der Wienerschnitzel' which serves 'Wiener' (Würstchen) but no Wiener Schnitzel at all. In addition it should be 'Das Wienerschnitzel'! So the question arises, what actually is Wiener Schnitzel and how is it made? If you can't get to an authentic German restaurant the best way to try the real thing is to make it yourself. |

| Cut the veal into at least finger thick fillets, so
they can be pounded well. After pounding flat dip both sides into the flour.
Blend the eggs with one tbsp. oil and some salt and pepper and pull the fillets
through this mixture. Finally, lay the fillets into the bread-crumbs, which
should cover all meat, but do not press the bread-crumbs on to the meat with
your fingers or they will become hard when frying. Fry in a small amount of oil
on medium heat for about 5 minutes on each side. The fillets should become a
golden brown. Serve the Schnitzels with salad and french fries (Pommes Frites, a.k.a. 'pommes') and remember that the 'Wiener Schnitzel' fast food chain have absolutely nothing to do with authentic German Wiener Schnitzel. |
