Meet Your New Obsession – The Porgs in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

The Last Jedi is coming to theaters December 15, and we are so excited to go on this next Star Wars adventure! We’ve already delighted in an amazing behind-the-scenes video from D23 Expo, and have flipped out over the epic teaser trailer. Now we’re being treated to new images from The Last Jedi, which introduce penguin-like creatures from the planet of Ahch-To (home of the first Jedi temple), and brace yourselves because they are super adorable! Porgs as they’re called, are furry, wide-eyed creatures with wings that make sounds while wobbling around. Thanks to Entertainment Weekly’s exclusive, we can now all admire their cuteness in this new image of a porg alongside Chewbacca:Ahhh, look at that face! We want a porg in our life.

The inspiration for porgs came from another adorable creature: puffins. Filmmakers saw the birds everywhere while filming the final scenes of The Force Awakens on the Irish island of Skellig Michael. The Last Jedi writer and director Rian Johnson told EW, “If you go to Skellig at the right time of year, it’s just covered in puffins, and they’re the most adorable things in the world.” He went on to say, “So when I was first scouting there, I saw these guys, and I was like, oh, these are part of the island. And so the Porgs are in that realm.” I think we can all pretty much agree that porgs are the cutest things out-of-this-world.

While porgs are definitely cuties in our eyes, we’ve learned that they cause problems and get everywhere––they even wander onto the Millennium Falcon, much to the chagrin of Chewbacca. They also aren’t the only creatures on Ahch-To.

Meet the Caretakers:They’re described by Johnson as “fish-bird type aliens” who have been on the island for thousands of years. They speak in their own alien language, but are able to communicate with Luke Skywalker in a “blubbery sort of Scottish fish talk.” We can’t wait to hear that! The Caretakers are all female and live a nun-like existence caring for the sacred island and protecting its temple. We’re intrigued.
