Stop Torture
We are witnessing an increasing number of countries that are torturing people. In 2011, Amnesty International identified a total of 101 countries and the forecast is for 112 countries next year.
Amnesty International pioneered the petitions and efforts that led to the enlargement of countries to sign and ratify the Convention Against Torture. AI’s efforts led to 155 countries ratifying this important document and transposing it into national law.
However, the law, by itself, is not enough and the government’s promises did not hold true. For this reason, we´ve launched the campaign STOP TORTURA.
The main goal of this campaign is to stand between torturers and victims, insisting that lawyers always be present during interrogations, doctors examine detainees and that confessions obtained under torture cannot be used as evidence in court.
We also insist that any person responsible for torture needs to be brought to justice.
The next two years our campaign will be focused on ensuring these safeguards. In countries such as, Philippines and Mexico, where torture is widespread in police stations.
In Nigeria, where beatings are only some of the punishments that people face during detention. And in Morocco, Western Sahara and Uzbekistan, where the courts base their decisions on confessions made under torture. All of these are countries to which the AI Portugal primarily focus’s its action.
But we can´t do it alone. Join us and stand for them.
Check out their stories, sign the petitions and help Amnesty International to give an end to torture and abuse.
