Repetition plays an important part in
Islamic art. Shapes -particularly geometry-
are repeated as geometric patterns and
used in art and architecture.
These patterns may symbolise the Islamic
principles of mizan (order and balance)
and tawhid (the unity of all things).
Islamic cultures also view patterns as
symbolic, e.g. the square -with its four
corners- sometimes represent the earth
with its four directions (north, south, east,
west).
