Patterns in Islamic Art
Repetition plays an important part in Islamic art. Shapes -particularly geometry- are repeated as geometric patterns and used in art and architecture.

These patterns may symbolise the Islamic principles of
mizan (order and balance) and tawhid (the unity of all things).

Islamic cultures also view patterns as
symbolic, e.g. the square -with its four corners- sometimes represent the earth with its four directions (north, south, east, west).
