The center of Ralad culture was their well-loved village of Raladin. Nearby lived the people of D'Or, a town that was once a beautiful garden with golden towers and lush flowers and trees. Over a hundred years ago, the evil monster-sorceress Thaegan, who hated anything beautiful, destroyed the town of D'Or and imprisoned its people with black magic. When the Ralads raised their voices against this cruelty, Thaegan silenced them forever. Until Thaegan is defeated, the Ralad people are voiceless, and must communicate by writing. The Shadow Lord wanted the Ralads for slaves, valuable because of their strength and skill. Suddenly, the Ralad people disappeared. It is assumed they were killed by Grey Guards while defending their village, or that they went into hiding. Because their voices were taken from them, the Ralads developed their language to substitute symbols for words. This makes written communication quicker and easier. Below are some common words and phrases in the symbol language of the Ralad.
