Germany Surrenders
The actual surrender documents had been signed on the previous day. However, since they were scheduled to take effect on May 8, this is what has gone down in history as V-E (Victory in Europe) Day. This was the occasion for massive celebrations, the largest of which took place in London, where more than a million people participated. The atmosphere in the United States was somewhat more subdued, since millions of Americans were still engaged in the fighting against Japan.
