Spitfire : The Battle of Britain June 16, 1940 Axis bombers have began attacking air bases and naval depots in the south of England, in order to pave the way for a full scale invasion of Great Britian. RAF Fighter Command are scrambling all spitfire squadrens, to engage the enemy. You must defend the skies over Britain, then onwards to the English channel, over occupied France, and onwards towards Berlin. 'The Battle of Britain is about to begin...Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, This Was Their Finest Hour.' - Winston Churhill - 1940. Controls Controling your Spitfire fighter craft is very simple, use the [arrow keys] to control your plane (left and right movement), and use the [space bar] to fire your weapon(s). Your ship will initially be equiped with a very basic machine gun, however you can increase your firepower by collecting various powerups that will become available throughout the course of the game. Some of the possible powerups are explained below : Power-Up Brief Description Rapid Fire Temporarily increases the rate of of your main machine gun, as well as the rate of fire of any extra gun pods you may have collected. Extra Rapid Fire As above, with even higher rate of fire. Heavy Calibre Temporarily converts your machine gun into a heavier calibre gun, which does more damage with each hit, and also enables you to destroy multiple targets with each shot. Extra Heavy Calibre As above, with even more power, and the ability to destroy even more targets with each shot. Extra Gun Pod This is an extra attachment for your plane which enables you to fire several shots at a time (up to 4 extra gun pods can be collected and used simultaneously). Gun pods last until they are destroyed by enemy fire. They also offer limited protection for your spitfire, bullets that might have normally destroyed your plane, will normally destroy your gun pod(s) first. Heavy Calibre Gun Pod As above, with more power, and the ability to destroy more targets with each shot. Extra Spitfire This is quite a rare power-up, if you collect this, you are awarded an extra reserve spitfire plane, thereby extending the life of your game.   Tips and Hints Hold down the [Space Bar] for rapid continous fire. Enemy aircraft will NOT harm you if they fly into your spitfire, the only thing you have to avoid is their weapons fire (red circular bullets).
