Doomsday
Development Background
Doomsday was the second arcade game developed especially for
San Francisco based internet games company Pogo.com (now acquired
by Electronic Arts). Doomsday was built from the ground up to
Pogo.com's specification, and was designed as an addition to their
suite of web based classic arcade games.
Game Instructions
Your objective in Doomsday is to save the major cities of Earth
from an incoming meteor shower which could potentially wipe out
the human race. You must operate various missile bases situated
around the globe in order to defend any cities that happen to
be in the path of these cosmic projectiles. You have a limted
supply of ammunition, so you must be as accurate with your missiles
as possible. At the end of each wave, you will be awarded more
ammmunition based on the percentage of the city that you manage
to save from destruction.
Game Controls
Your missiles are always targeted toward the aiming recticle
(cross hair) which is controlled by your mouse. Pressing the left
or right mouse button will fire a missile from your left or right
missile launcher respectively (pressing 'A' or 'D' on your keyboard
will also launch missiles from your left and right missile launchers
respectively). You also have access to an SDI satellite defense
network, activating this 'super weapon' will destroy all hostile
projectiles on screen at once. This weapon can be activated by
pressing the <space bar>, or by clickng on the SDI panel towards
the bottom of the screen. You should use this weapon very sparingly,
as you have very limted ammunition for it, however you are awarded
an addition SDI round after successfully completing each wave.
Threats
In addition to the aforementioned meteors, you must also be on
the look out for comets which will occasionally streak across
the sky dropping more hostile projectiles in their wake. There
are also a few man-made artifacts that can threaten Earth's cities.
For example, meteors can sometimes knock out SDI sateltites from
orbit, sending them on an unpredictable flight above the city,
randomly firing their lasers at the ground below. Also, parts
of the Mir spacestation can be knocked out, and sent hurtling
down towards the ground on an erratic path.
Tips and Hints
Always remember to aim ahead of a projectile's direction of movement,
since it will take time for your missile to fly to it's target.
Try to aim your missiles so that they destroy multiple targets,
as ammunition might become scarce at times (particularly during
later levels).
Avoid hitting civilian air traffic at all costs, as you will
lose 5000 points for each jetliner destroyed.
If a rogue SDI satelite appears on screen, make it a top priority
to destroy it as quickly as you can. Once they start firing their
laser, they can very quickly destroy much of the city below.
Don't waste ammunition or effort defending parts of the city
that have already be destroyed.
